Cricket Training with Neil

Here in Te Ngahere, we had recently been out for cricket training. Paihia School had a special visitor named Neil come into our school to teach us the basics on how to play cricket. At first I wasn't as confident because I have not played cricket in a very long time. We first had to get into pairs, the next thing we had to do was line up behind each cone that had a bat and three tennis balls next to it. When it was my turn to bat I was very nervous but as Jorjah and I kept practising I started to get the hang of it. After we had been practising Neil decided that we should start speed cricket. I was in the group that was batting out to the fielders. I learnt how hold a bat correctly, your legs have to be shoulder width apart and your hands have to be shaped as a v with your thumb and index finger. I personally do enjoy playing cricket but next time I need to be more confident when I play. Do you play cricket ?

 

My Holiday

 Throughout the 2 weeks of the holiday my friend and I had been deciding on activities to do. We came up with the idea to blow up 300+ balloons and put them all into the room, I personally did not think that we both would be able to blow up that amount of balloons by ourselves. I found it quite difficult to stop the balloons from popping as there were many things in the room that could cause the balloons to pop. My friend and I had recently watched a video of people that had dressed up as glow sticks which inspired us to try it out ourselves. We had to get a lot of tape for the glowsticks to stay on our clothing. I really enjoyed my holiday. How was your holiday ?

Mahi Toi

 Here in Te Ngahere we have been doing calendar art. Our goal was to draw continuous lines, draw curves, rule straight lines, select colours for effect and blend colours. We first got a piece of paper that had a slight outline of a design that looked like a koru. I decided to use a pencil because I personally thought that it was easier to sketch with, instead of using pens or colouring in pencils. I found it difficult to see the outline at some point because the lines were very light and not easy to see. I enjoyed going over the outlines because it was easier for me instead of drawing my own koru design free handed. Have you done calendar art before ?  

Through The Windows

 Here in Te Ngahere we have been doing maths. Our goal was to calculate areas and perimeters. The task that we were given was difficult because we had to find out the price for each square. We first had to understand the layout of the glass so that we could find the perimeter and areas of the square. Next we had to figure out the width and the length of the glass so that we could multiply the width by the length, since we were using centimeters to measure the length we had to times centimeter by centimeter which equaled cm². Do you like math ? 

                           

Kia Orahi Drills

 Here in Te Ngahere we have been doing P.E drills. The game that we have decided to practice for was Kia orahi. Our main focus was to learn how to throw the ball properly and to spread around. The rules of the game are that you can not hold the ball for more then 3 seconds or you can not run through Te Ara. I personally enjoy playing Kia orahi because I got to experience a new game and it also helps me to improve on my skills. I found Kia o rahi very difficult at first but as we started to practise a lot more, I got the hang of it. Hopefully we get the chance to participate in a kia orahi tournament.

                                

The Measurements of the Pounamu Pendants

 Here in Te Ngahere we have been doing learning around measurements. Our activity was pounamu pendants. We were learning to find the total amount of green squares so that we could turn the amount of squares into a percentage. This activity involved measurements  which at first I found very confusing but as we all started to work together I finally got the hang of it. I personally enjoyed adding up all of the amount of green squares because It was challenging for me, after we had added up all of the green squares we had to divide the total by 135 then times the total by 100. Do you enjoy doing maths ?

What Do You Think About Paper Castles ?

 Here in Te Ngahere we have been doing maths. Our goal was to use the correct measurements to create a paper castle. We first had to get into our maths groups so we could decide and share what we learnt. My group started off by practising how to draw straight lines to match the examples. I decided to make the wall sections while the other group members make the square tower and the circular tower’s. I personally enjoy doing this maths because it helps me to understand measurement. What I found difficult was to draw symmetrical lines because I couldn't tell if the lines were straight or not. Have you made a paper castle ?
