Bag Making

Here in Te Ngahere we had a special guest named Anouk come into Paihia School. She taught our class how to reuse old t-shirts to create a bag. Anouk first started by showing the class a presentation that she had created about the making of t-shirts and what plastic does to the environment. We were learning to reuse old t-shirts and give them a purpose again. We started off by cutting the sleeves and the color of the t-shirt with a sharp pair of fabric scissors. I found that step very difficult because you had to make sure that the lines were the right length. We then measured how long we wanted the tassels to be but I decided to flip my t-shirt inside out and tie the tassels on the inside so that you can’t see them. The most hardest thing to do in my opinion was to tie the tassels because some did not match up and there were some extra ones but I did get my bag how I want it and I am very proud of what I made. I learnt that t-shirts use 2750 litres of water.

BioBlitz

At Paihia School 20 of  the year 6’s got the opportunity to go to the BioBlitz in Wairoa Bay. We were all so excited to go and learn how to look after the environment. We were comparing the area to back when Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander surveyed the area about 250 years ago. The year 6’s had arranged their school t-shirts so that we knew which sized we needed. We all did our morning hui, then it was time for the year 6’s to go the BioBlitz. I went in the van with Gina and some other students. Once we arrived we made our way over to the white tent with mats inside of them also known as the home base. The schools that came were Waikare, Karetu, Paihia and Opua. All of the schools were playing around on the field waiting for the scientist to be ready. The first activity that I did was mammals. We just went around talking about the types of mammals that they have caught. We were learning how to identify the animals by their footprints. The next activity we did was Birds, I had seen so many Tui and Kereru. As we were watching out for birds a kereru swooped down and gave me a  humongous fright. My favorite activity was the Marine because I learnt new things like the pacific oysters are actually native to Japan and not New Zealand. I hope we can go back and do another BioBlitz.
